With age, the face will deflate, descend and degenerate. Lines and creases develop due to gravity and repeated muscle action. For example, the crease from the corners of the nose to the mouth (nasolabial fold) and the crease from the corners mouth to the jawline (marionette line) and fine lines around the mouth (perioral lines). With age, often the jawline becomes scalloped and not smooth. Jowls develop. The cheek apples descend and deflate giving us a more rectangular rather than a more youthful triangular face. The lower eyelid becomes longer and look more skeletonized.
Filler are products that fill in and volumize the face. They are a great way to refresh the face without surgery. Fillers can be used to help fill in lines like the nasolabial fold, perioral lines and marionette lines. They can be used to deaccentuate the jowl and make the jawline more smooth and youthful. They can also be used for volume. They can plump up the cheeks and eyelid to give a more youthful and less tired look. And of course, lips can be enlarged using fillers.
Fillers can be performed with or without local anaesthesia (like at the dentist). There is no surgery involved. It is an office procedure. Most treatments take between 30 and 60 minutes. The down time is minimal, with bruising and swelling being the most common temporary side effects.
There are many types of fillers. Some fillers are best suited for certain areas.
Juvederm or Restylane are hyaluronic acid fillers. They last anywhere from 3 to 9 months. The longevity may vary from person to person and from area to area.
